I need to talk about Shadow of the Colossus for a second. It is a really weird game. I haven't played it in several years but, man, I was looking at screenshots of it and that sort of thing because of a different thing I was doing and it reminded me how much I love that game.

For one thing, I really like the combat in it. There's something really satisfying about defeating an enemy through platforming followed by puzzle-solving. Within the narrative it is supposed to be all dramatic and sad when you kill one of the colosssi, which it is, but it also rules to climb onto a giant dude's sword and then stab his tummy and brains until he dies.

The horse in the game is freakishly huge. I like that you can stand on his back. And I like that he's freakishly huge.

Shadow of the Colossus also managed something that I think Breath of the Wild failed at, which is an almost entirely directionless adventure in a mostly empty world. I think Breath of the Wild failed at this because it uses conventions of modern gaming that most people who play a lot of games are familiar with (Ubisoft towers, fast travel). If you have played any modern open world sandbox, you see a tower and immediately grok that you have to climb it to unlock more of the map, even without a tutorial ghost telling you that you have to do that. In Shadow of the Colossus you have to follow beams of light coming out of your sword to find the next colossi and collect lizards with white tails to increase your grip. Also you can stand on your horse.

That's all, really.
